James Plotkin - A Strange, Perplexing (1996)

From amazon.com:
This is definitely Plotkin's most utterly "ambient" solo release, on a par with his collaborations with Mark Spybey, Brent Gutzeit, Mick Harris, etc. There are no rhythm tracks, bass lines, or other such frills. The only source instrument listed is the guitar, but as usual, you wouldn't know this by listening to it. It's been completely manipulated and deconstructed into purely abstract sound. The first time I heard the hint of a melody was on track 5. Overall, I dare say it sounds a little cliche. To be fair, according to the liner notes the recordings span from 1993 to 1996, and I don't think it would have sounded so hackneyed during that period. (Well, maybe to Brian Eno it would have.) Like most ambient, it's great when you're in the mood. When you aren't in the mood, listening to it can be a frustrating experience.

Вот что говорят рунграммофонщики:
First non-norwegian artists on the label, needless to say we really love this record and are proud to have it in our catalogue. With cello, guitar and electronics our Swizz friends weave a beautiful, detailed and fragile soundscape. References to ambient, electronica and contemporary music but basically beyond categorisation. We seem to be hearing Eno in here somewhere, but can´t really say why. Check it out!

Birdsongs Of The Mesozoic - Dawn Of The Cycads (2008, Cuneiform 274/5)

Birdsongs Of The Mesozoic began in 1980 as a side project by half of Boston's famed rock band, Mission Of Burma: Roger Miller and Martin Swope. Miller and Swope joined forces with Rick Scott and Erik Lindgren. Perhaps because of their tie to the ever-popular Burma or perhaps because of their sheer excellence Birdsongs Of The Mesozoic earned international recognition for their innovative sound. The New York Times called them "the world's hardest rocking chamber music quartet." Their unlikely mix of rock, punk, classical, minimalism, and free-form sound appealed to a broad range of musical tastes. As Roger remembers in the liner notes, "If I had to say what I thought was most unique about the band, it was that we actually played rock clubs and basically pulled off this rather unorthodox thing. Well sure, we pissed off some rockers ("Just look at 'em up there, shuffling their papers!"), but that wasn't really our concern. If this odd quartet wasn't about as different as you could get and still play those venues, well at least we put up a pretty good fight." Rick Scott comments, "We were always the square peg in a world of round holes. Our instruments weren't bass, guitar, and drums, but guitar, three keyboards, and drum machine (with turntable, water can, washboard, and clarinet thrown in for good measure!). We played in rock clubs, but read from sheet music. We shared the stage with three-chord rockers, but played music from Brian Eno and Igor Stravinsky, and covered the theme from 'Rocky and Bullwinkle'. It boggles the mind how we got away with it."
For the first time ever, all of the band's 3 recordings for Ace of Hearts (Birdsongs of the Mesozoic, Magnetic Flip and Beat of the Mesozoic) are reissued in their entirety and in the order in which they were originally heard when they were issued. In the the words of Erik Lindgren, the remastering, "sonically makes the 'Sonic Geology' package irrelevant."

Review by Scott Yanow
This is a well-rounded set featuring drummer/leader Barry Altschul, pianist Anthony Davis, rambunctious trombonist Ray Anderson and bassist Rick Rozie. The four lengthy performances include a solo feature for Altschul ("Drum Role"), the intriguing title cut, an Anthony Davis ballad ("Sleepwalker") and a fine 13 1/2 minute interpretation of Charles Mingus' "Orange Was the Color of Her Dress, Then Silk Blues." A continually interesting set.

From allmusic.com:
Although Dave Douglas is credited as leader, Sanctuary is not just an album of him supported by a backing band. Instead, Douglas plays as equal member in a project of standout musicians. Team work is the theme; live performance is the key. Each CD is a nonstop recording of a different August 1996 show at N.Y.C.'s Knitting Factory. Heard is the great interplay between Douglas, Cuong Vu, and Chris Speed as their horn conversations intermittently get animated and peak, then settle back within the band. The sampling — provided by Anthony Coleman and Cibo Matto's Yuka Honda — playfully interacts with the rest of the music on disc one. Throughout "The Lethe" and "Dark Wood," for example, the sampling provide humor and thrills, interjecting into the music like zoo animals spontaneously joining in visitors' conversations! During "Dome" and "Heavenly Messenger," the basses of Mark Dresser and Hillard Greene sound simultaneously like a creaking ship, a mournful violin, and a dress slowly zipped by another. They then follow a stair-tumbling drum solo by teaming with the samplers. At other times, the drums and basses form a simply steady rhythm section. Disc one's concert closes with sampled electronic beats running beneath slow swells and statements made by the group, sounding like a dance track played at too slow of a speed. The concert heard on disc two opens cacophonous and splurty, and stays relatively crazy until "Lantern"'s spookhouse quiet suspense. "Mad Dog" includes a terrific drum solo from Dougie Bowne. Again, the horns play tight and exciting throughout, and the samplers provide more ambience, with backwards voices and organ sounds, later adding groove-oriented beat tracks. Never guilty of carrying any style or approach for too long, the musicians keep mixing it up, yielding two excellent, well-rounded shows' worth of recordings. Part abstract space shooting, part late-night dance party, all mixed with the scratching and balladry of outside jazz, Sanctuary is a definite strong addition to any collection that values these musicians, and a good introduction to them for all adventurous listeners ready to jump right in.

Yang - A Complex Nature (2004, Cuneiform 197)
Artist: Yang
Title: A Complex Nature
Date: 2004
Label: Cuneiform Rune 197
Quality: MP3 VBR 256 Kbps
Size: 89,8 Mb
Yang, a French quartet whose stunning compositons combine intricate guitar parts with driving rock, is the newest project led by French guitarist and composer Frederic L’Epйe. ’Epйe’s
former projects include founding two of the most intriguing all-instrumental bands to emerge from France and capture international interest: Shylock and Philharmonie. Yang, L’Epee’s post-Philharmonie band, extends some of Philarmonie’s compositional ideas while adopting a harder tempered, more rock-based approach. Featuring the 'standard' line-up of two guiarists, bass and drums, Yang play a dynamic instrumental music that rocks hard, and which bears comparisons to groups such as Gordian Knot and King Crimson. L’Epйe formed Yang in September, 2002. Yang’s debut CD consists of 8 compositions written by L’Epйe with each of the specific band members in mind. The band recorded the CD quickly, spending only 3 days in the studio in a conscious attempt to harness the power and spontanaety of live performance. Featuring intricate and often beautiful guitar pieces embedded in harder-tempered rock compositions, complex rhythms and melodic modes not previously seen in L’Epйe’s work, and a rich variety of guitar treatments, A Complex Nature is an inventive, dynamic and accessible instrumental work that rocks hard. It is, in L’Epйe’s own words: “the next step after Philharmonie’s last CDs: Rage and The Last Word.” This exciting and hard-rocking album features some subtly stunning work from all players, and is probably as close to an 'air guitar' album as you will ever hear from Cuneiform!

Diane Labrosse. Martin Tetreault. Haco - Lunch In Nishinomiya (2005)

Quality: MP3 CBR 192 Kbps
Size: 62,2 Mb
In the trio album Lunch in Nishinomiya, Haco (contact microphones, oscillators, effects) joins forces with two leading Montreal improvisers known for their innovative playing--Diane Labrosse (sampler) and Martin Tetreault (turntable, surfaces, small electronics). When Labrosse and Tetreault came to Japan in 2003, they found a kindred spirit in Haco. The three recorded an improvised music session at Haco's studio in Nishinomiya (near Osaka), and later completed the construction and mix through an e-mail exchange between Canada and Japan. This is not Haco the songstress. With exquisite balance, the trio combine a variety of grating, explosive, scraping, vibrating sounds (noises) with precise breathing and dynamism, tension and relaxation. The result is extremely delicate electroacoustic sound. Eight tracks in all.

Review by Thom Jurek
If Otomo Yoshihide can interpret Eric Dolphy and Marc Ribot can do Albert Ayler, then why not Nels Cline doing Andrew Hill — who is still alive and creating marvelously, with his recordings in the current century clear evidence of this. As Cline describes his approach in the liner notes, this most certainly is not a tribute record or an attempt to completely re-create Hill's music. The transcriptions came from recordings rather than notated sources. He also writes that the bandmembers — like many of Hill's ensembles — do not play on changes (in "Dedication" and the medley "Yokada Yokada/The Rumproller" — a bit of humor tossed in — they do, but nowhere else). The band includes Cline on guitars, Ben Goldberg on clarinets, Bobby Bradford on cornet, Andrea Parkins on accordion and sonics, Devin Hoff on bass, drummer Scott Amendola, and Alex Cline playing drums on "Dedication" and "Compulsion." This is an unusual lineup, but then, perhaps the music, interpreted as it is here from nearly all of Hill's periods, demanded it. There are four medleys, so Cline could get as much in as possible. The opening set, which blends "McNeil Island" with "Pumpkin," is held together by the general restraint of the ensemble and Bradford's muscular cornet. In the medleys, the band is much freer, and engaging a sense of humor that has always been in Hill's work but is generally not considered — although in the next track, "Not Sa No Sa," the free playing reaches a peak with Parkins barging through the mix with her accordion and Cline playing his fiery, distorted best. ... From allmusic.com:
Review by Dave Lynch
Led Bib are explosive enough to blow up your speakers — after they've done a number on their own speakers, that is. The British quintet plays hot-wired electric jazz-rock with two alto saxes wailing over (usually) electric keys and bass plus no-nonsense drums — and, incidentally, drummer Mark Holub composes nearly all the band's material. Those saxes, belonging to Chris Williams and Pete Grogan and nicely positioned in the stereo field, are practically mirror images, matched in tone and intensity as they pair up in harmony, echo each other in counterpoint, or democratically divide up the soloing space. There's a '90s New York downtown feel to their tone, phrasing, and interplay, recalling in particular the two altos of Ned Rothenberg and Thomas Chapin in Rothenberg's funked-up Double Band releases on the Moers label. Yet Liran Donin's fuzzy rattling bass and Toby McLaren's burning Fender Rhodes truly differentiate this group from the pack — it sometimes seems like Donin in particular has decided that nothing could possibly elevate the proceedings more than playing through a demolished speaker, and McLaren makes the overdriven sound of Miles Davis' fusion-era electric keyboardists seem like George Winston. The opening moments of "Yes, Again" waltz darkly, offering few clues of what's around the corner: the brief assault of an angular theme followed by a squeaky buzzing and pounding blast of ear-shredding keyboard and bass driven by rock-solid rhythms underpinning those siren-wailing saxes. Tempos shift, constrict, and loosen as the band uncoils, only to tighten back into the theme and stop on a dime just as your neighbors shout at you to turn the stereo down. The playful two-note sax blurt beginning "Squirrel Carnage" is joined by the rest of the band's clipped phrases and fractured rhythms, suddenly overtaken by that thick fuzz bass and Rhodes as the energy builds and McLaren unleashes a frantic solo followed by squalling saxophone and an abrupt tumble onto a free-form plateau. Led Bib are not afraid to abandon the rhythm, as they do for a short spell here, but they also relish bringing everything back together, assembling compositional puzzle pieces and ratcheting the energy level up, slamming into a tightly focused finale.

Bracing work from a trio of young moderns — Steve Swell on trombone, Rob Brown on alto sax, and Daniel Levin on cello! The album's partially under Swell's leadership, as half the tunes are his own compositions — but some of the best numbers here are improvisations, which are equally weighted to the talents of all three players — recorded in very open, abstract territory. Titles include "Out Of The Box", "Airtight", "#2 Of Nine", "Not Necessarily This Nor That", "Planet Dream", "Juxtsuppose", "Texture #2", and "City Life". © Dusty Groove America, Inc.
